What is Fadó?

Fadó [fah-doe] is the Irish word for "long ago"—the traditional opening line for old folktales, much like "once upon a time."

As a brand, Fadó Leather is a creative studio dedicated to giving beautiful things a second history. We take gently used, pre-loved leather goods and use a tattoo machine to permanently etch original artwork straight into the grain. It’s our way of honoring heritage, fighting disposable culture, and transforming the stains of old stories into new love letters.

How does your product/service work?

Every piece that passes through the studio follows a deliberate, hands-on journey:

  • The Hunt: I source high-quality, pre-loved leather bags, purses, and wallets from estate sales, vintage shops, and collectors—looking for pieces with incredible structural integrity and a history worth preserving.

  • The Transformation: After cleaning and prepping the leather, I use a standard tattoo machine and ink to permanently etch original designs straight into the grain. Just like on skin, this ink is permanent and becomes a structural part of the piece.

  • The Release: Because every single piece is individualized and done completely by hand, items are released in curated, limited drops rather than kept continuously in stock. Once a specific piece is claimed, it’s officially part of someone else’s history.

How much does it cost?

Each item is a standalone piece of artwork, so pricing varies based on the size of the "canvas" and the complexity of the tattoo work.

Sourcing gently used, pre-loved leather allows us to keep these pieces significantly more accessible than traditional luxury fashion items. At the same time, because of the original machine work and the time required to etch each design by hand, they are true investment pieces built to endure.

Exact pricing is listed individually with each item inside the current drop. If everything is currently sold out, you can always browse the Archive to get a sense of the scale and style of past work.

Do you offer commisions?

Occasionally! I open a very limited number of custom commission slots throughout the year as my schedule allows.

Because these are highly individualized art pieces, I am selective about the projects I take on to ensure I can truly do justice to the concept and convey the design beautifully.

When slots are about to open, first dibs always go to our studio newsletter subscribers. While I do post general updates via social channels, joining the email list is the best way to make sure you don't miss the window.

Wait, can I still use the item once it's been tattooed?

Absolutely. These aren't delicate museum pieces meant to sit on a shelf—they are built to be carried out into the world.

Because I use a real tattoo machine, the ink isn't just sitting on top of the leather like paint or vinyl; it is etched straight into the grain. It won't flake, chip, or rub off onto your clothes.

Once the artwork is finished, I seal the leather to protect the design and help prevent premature patina. But remember—leather is a living material. Much like our own skin naturally softens and fades in the sun over time, that natural aging should be welcomed. It’s a beautiful sign of a life lived and a story carried forward.

What if I have questions about my order?

I’m here to help. Because Fadó is a small, independent studio, you won’t be dealing with a robotic automated system or a massive customer service queue.

If you need a status update, have a question about shipping, or just want to chat about a piece you purchased, send a note over to hello@fadoleather.store. Drop your order number in the subject line, and I will get back to you as soon possible.
